You are the backbone of your family (plus: Mom's moving here this week)

I hope you had a lovely Fourth of July! Our tradition of visiting our friend's cabin fell through due to their family getting sick, so we made the most of it at home, with pool visits and a last minute BBQ.

We're also preparing for a big life transition this week: my Mom moves close to us in just two days. We've been planning for this for a while, but the fact that it's actually happening is still sinking in. I'm looking forward to getting her settled, even though I know it's going to be a busy few weeks. This is the start of our new life together with her, and I'll keep you updated as we go.

Below, find some highlights of companies and stories of interest to us in the Sandwich Generation. Whether you realize it or not, you all are the backbones of your family, and you are amazing. - Jenna

In the News:

  • I've been following the development of Hera, a care management company that matches families with senior care experts who support aging seniors with chronic conditions (like diabetes or heart disease). 90% of their clients pay $0 out of pocket thanks to Original Medicare coverage. They currently support families in New York, New Jersey, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. I hope they continue to grow!
  • A company called Dandelion recently launched, and I'm on the waitlist. It's an AI-native legacy planning platform for families across generations. It stores legal paperwork like wills, practical info like insurance details, and personal keepsakes, for example recipes, messages, and voice notes you'd want your family to have. I'm really excited to try this out.

Article of the week:

Parentification and the Emotional Sandwich Generation. As the author outlines, this stage of life means raising children, healing our own past, and figuring out a new relationship with our aging parents, all while navigating old family patterns.

The most important part of the article is a reminder that taking care of ourselves, doing something to feed our souls, is the backbone of healing and still being able to support our loved ones.

Quote of the week:

You cannot set yourself on fire to keep somebody else warm. ~ Author unknown.

As I head into this next chapter with Mom during a busy summer season of work and extra time with my sweet but wild kids, this quote is the one I'm holding onto.

Hi all! I've been sharing articles about elder care, parenting, and caregiving. This week, I wanted to share a couple of articles that remind us to take care of our bodies, starting with some of the basic decisions we make at the grocery store. My dad died of pancreatic cancer earlier this year, and as I'm in my 40s and thinking about the future, I'd like to treat my body just a little more kindly and reduce my risk of pancreatic or other GI cancers. I hope you find this useful! Jenna...

Hello! It's been a packed back-to-school season. I work for an EdTech company, so this is a busy time of year at work. Of course, I'm also helping my daughter with her transition back to school (transitions have always been among her least favorite parts of life, and she started the school year insisting she wouldn't go and needed more summer vacation...), and getting my son ready to start daycare! My mom has been very slowly settling into her new apartment, but there have been lots of bumps...

Hi! How are you? This is the last newsletter of August, so summer is officially wrapping up. This weekend I decided it would be a great idea to take my mom and both kids to IKEA on a Saturday morning, to help her pick out items for her new apartment and grab lunch in the cafeteria. What was I thinking?? Between the kids darting off in six directions and my mom needing time to really consider every option, we left with a tiring (but fun) morning behind us and exactly zero items checked off the...
