Taking care of ourselves, one grocery trip at a time

Hi all! I've been sharing articles about elder care, parenting, and caregiving. This week, I wanted to share a couple of articles that remind us to take care of our bodies, starting with some of the basic decisions we make at the grocery store.

My dad died of pancreatic cancer earlier this year, and as I'm in my 40s and thinking about the future, I'd like to treat my body just a little more kindly and reduce my risk of pancreatic or other GI cancers. I hope you find this useful!

Articles of the week:

The Best and Worst Foods to Prevent GI Cancer (and Why Big Picture Patterns Matter the Most) - Super Age. This one's worth a read if you feel overwhelmed trying to eat healthy while also getting your family to actually eat the food. Diet plays a role in GI cancer risk. The basic message is pretty simple: red and processed meats, alcohol, smoked and ultra-processed foods are associated with higher risk, while fiber-rich produce, whole grains, legumes, and probiotic foods like yogurt and kimchi may help lower it.

But the more reassuring finding is that your overall eating pattern matters more than any single food you eat or avoid. Researcher Sarah Alver's team found that people with higher overall diet quality had lower levels of GI cancer biomarkers, regardless of any one ingredient. As one dietitian put it, this "underscores the importance of a general healthy diet" over chasing superfoods or banning entire food groups. For those of us feeding a family, a lot of this comes down to habits. Where you can, fill your family up on plant-forward foods, like beans, whole grains, and produce. A few consistent swaps (grilled chicken over hot dogs, frozen fruit with yogurt instead of ice cream) can make a difference without requiring you to get every meal perfect.

Related article: A study following more than 95,000 adults for 18 years found that people who ate walnuts five or more times a week had a 14% lower risk of dying during the study and gained close to two extra years of life expectancy at age 60. This was an observational study, so it can't prove that walnuts themselves were the cause, but it adds to a growing body of research tying regular walnut consumption to healthier aging overall. If you're looking for one small, low-effort swap to start with, a handful of walnuts in your bag or on your desk is about as easy as it gets.

Quote of the week:

Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation. ~ Audre Lorde

Feeding yourself well, even imperfectly, even with a yogurt-and-walnuts breakfast instead a bagel, is a small form of self-preservation.

Hello! It's been a packed back-to-school season. I work for an EdTech company, so this is a busy time of year at work. Of course, I'm also helping my daughter with her transition back to school (transitions have always been among her least favorite parts of life, and she started the school year insisting she wouldn't go and needed more summer vacation...), and getting my son ready to start daycare! My mom has been very slowly settling into her new apartment, but there have been lots of bumps...

Hi! How are you? This is the last newsletter of August, so summer is officially wrapping up. This weekend I decided it would be a great idea to take my mom and both kids to IKEA on a Saturday morning, to help her pick out items for her new apartment and grab lunch in the cafeteria. What was I thinking?? Between the kids darting off in six directions and my mom needing time to really consider every option, we left with a tiring (but fun) morning behind us and exactly zero items checked off the...

Hi! How are you? We're trying to make the most of these final weeks of summer by being outside more. We went swimming this week at the pool in my mom's new apartment complex, and tonight had a picnic with friends. My kids have loved listening to the evening crickets. I want big things in life: travel, adventure, new experiences. But I also know that the pressure of helping my mom while raising two little kids and holding down a job is putting some of that on hold. Still, when I listen to the...
